Finding Your Calm: The Healing Power of Getting Wrapped Up in Creativity
There's a moment that every crafter knows. The world outside is loud, life is busy, the to-do list is endless - and then you sit down, pick up your tools, and everything just... quiets.
For me, that moment came in 2020. Like so many of us, life had become a whirlwind of uncertainty, hustle, and stress.
I needed somewhere to go - not physically, but mentally. A place to breathe.
And I found it in clay.
A World of Your Own
There is something truly magical about working with your hands. When you're shaping, sculpting, painting - your mind has no choice but to follow.
The chatter fades. The worries step back. You float off into your own little creative world, and for a while, nothing else exists.
It doesn't matter whether you're a seasoned maker or a complete beginner. Creativity has no entry requirements.
It asks only that you show up, and it gives back tenfold.
For me, clay became my go-to place - not just once, but again and again over the years.
On the difficult days, the busy days, the days when I simply needed to step away from the noise of life for a little while.
It has never let me down.
The Magic I Didn't Expect
What I didn't anticipate when I started Clayful Thoughts was the extra layer of magic that would come from the people.
During those times when the world felt so disconnected - when families couldn't visit, when friends couldn't hug, when the miles between loved ones felt impossibly wide - I found myself helping people bridge that gap.
Through a handcrafted keepsake and a heartfelt personalised message, I was able to help over 2,000 human beings reach out and touch the heart of another and share their love and comfort and a smile.
The "thinking of you" messages. The comfort gifts sent when words felt impossible to find. The little clay tokens that travelled across the miles carrying so much love. I cannot put into words how much being able to achieve this has meant to me.
Clayful Thoughts has brought more into my life since 2020 than I ever could have imagined.
You Don't Have to Make It a Business
Here's something I want you to know - crafting doesn't have to be a business.
It doesn't have to be productive, profitable, or purposeful in any conventional sense.
It can simply be yours.
Your escape. Your hour of peace. Your excuse to put on your favourite music and disappear for a while.
I'm a spa music girl at heart, but I won't lie — a bit of 60s and 70s absolutely turns the heat up and makes Wilma (my beloved pottery wheel), spin that little bit faster. A bit like when you crank up the volume of a Rock Song when you are vacuuming, only considerably more fun and rewarding! 😄
And if, like me, you discover that crafting and crafting supplies are in fact two entirely separate hobbies - well, you're in very good company.
My husband Bob has been wonderfully accommodating as the house has been taken over on more than one occasion by supplies, works in progress, and the occasional craft fair set-up taking shape in the living room.
He is a saint. 🙏
Your Invitation
Whether you've always wanted to try working with clay, or you're simply looking for a new way to find a little calm in your day - I'd love to encourage you to give it a go.
Put the phone down. Pop the kettle on. Choose your music. And let your hands lead the way.
You might just find your own magical place to be. 🌿
With love,
